BUYING

I was a commercial buyer for 12 years for importers/distributors selling to hotels, restaurants, independent and online shops and supermarkets. A buyer's responsibility is to buy quality wine that sells. Anyone can buy wine, but the key is to sell the wine so the producer, the importer and the customer are successful in their businesses.

TASTING

Through grit and practice, I passed the notoriously difficult 36 blind wine Masters of Wine tasting exam on the first attempt. I went on to use my palate professionally as a buyer to select quality wines for importation into the UK, Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China.

I am a panel chair judge for the IWC sake competition in London, leading a team of judges over three days usually tasting over 200 Japanese sakes.

I judged at a few selected competitions which were put on hold during the pandemic when I was unable to travel. I have judged in the past for the Decanter Wine Awards, the IWC and the Sydney International Wine Competition.

I am active in the MW and WSET education programs. I also provide MW practical 12 wine blind tastings to prepare students for their exams in Hong Kong.

I have been an annual guest lecturer (professor for a day) at Hong Kong PolyU for MSc students in International Wine Management since 2022.

I have delivered masterclasses in Mandarin Chinese and English on food and wine matching, blind wine tasting tips, wine buying, the UK wine market and introduction to Japanese sake.
